When Baby Rose sings she puts her heart on full display, making her talent undeniable. Her piercing honesty and storytelling through a myriad of blended music genres makes her one of the strongest, most captivating voices in music today.
Baby Rose (born Jasmine Rose Wilson), is a Grammy-nominated recording artist, Atlanta- based singer, songwriter, and producer. She was born in Washington, D.C on August 5th. Her parents’ involvement in culture around the city meant she was constantly around music. Rose also lived with her great aunt, an elder and woman of the South, who helped raise her. Growing up, there was constantly a mix of genres in her ears, from traditional gospel hymns to hip-hop, r&b, psychedelic, funk, alternative, soul, jazz, and folk music. Surrounded by strong women, from her own mother to her aunt, Rose was inspired to take in all of the lessons life had to offer. Watching those around her keenly, she could empathize early on to what she had yet to experience. Her desire to create art was encouraged by her family at an early age, and she began to write poetry, and read her poems at family holidays and reunions.
For her 9th birthday, Rose’s uncle gifted her a piano. After moving to Fayetteville, North Carolina, Rose spent long stretches of time in her home’s foyer on the piano, experimenting with her voice, writing songs and listening to artists such as Nina Simone, Janis Joplin and Donny Hathaway who were vocally and lyrically pushing boundaries. Rose knew that she had a gift she wanted to explore.
At 13-years-old, per advice of her mom’s friend, she began recording her music in studios around North Carolina. In high school, following years of bullying around her voice, she decided to take a risk and enter her school’s talent show. A piano was rolled out for her to perform an original song titled “Bonnie and Clyde,” and she won first place.
These collective moments put a fire in Rose, and led her to believe in her passion as more than a gift, but a purpose. With plans to attend college, she moved to Atlanta with her mother and brother and immersed herself into Atlanta’s music scene.
Under the guise of a songwriter, Rose collaborated with many producers and wrote with different artists in mind to build her catalog. She faced a lot of resistance on her journey and found herself quitting, but after her mother fell ill with cancer and spent a tenure in the hospital, Rose decided to come back and actively pursue music as an artist.
Rose collaborated with one of her first musical friends in Atlanta, producer Casey Graham, to work on her debut EP, From Dusk ‘Til Dawn – a yin and yang experience. You hear and feel both the hot, intense, and cold, somber parts of love and life — which Rose saw through her family and friends. The release of From Dusk ‘Til Dawn prompted Rose to begin shamelessly promoting her music, playing at bars, showcases and parties in Atlanta and the South East. Buzz around Rose’s name began to pick up, with SZA, Kehlani, and J.Cole co-signing her talent. But the lack of clearance of samples meant she couldn’t release it on all streaming music platforms. This put a new desire in her to create a completely original album. Enter, To Myself.
Rose was also part of studio sessions for Dreamville’s third compilation album, Revenge of the Dreamers III. Along with Ari Lennox and Bas, Baby Rose lends her voice to “Self Love.”
Released on July 5, 2019, the album went on to go Platinum and be nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2019 Grammy Awards. By the time Rose signed a distribution deal with Human Re-Sources, she had already released a series of singles and projects on her Soundcloud, and her debut album, To Myself, was complete. To Myself, released on August 22, 2019, is a critically acclaimed debut album and collection of tracks in which the ebbs and flows of going through a breakup are on full display. Rose pulls solely from her own vulnerabilities to shape an experience led by her commanding voice. Since then, she’s toured with Ari Lennox, Snoh Aalegra and has had her own debut U.S and European tour. She later upstreamed to sign with Island Records.
Rose is expertly writing her own story. The confidence she has in her message and ability to take experiences with life and turn them into timeless records makes her a leading voice in today’s music landscape.
